AYO is a full symphony orchestra comprised of 75 of Aucklands most talented young musicians (ages 14-24). Founded in 1948, AYO is the premier regional youth orchestra in New Zealand and was the first youth orchestra established in the Southern Hemisphere, designed to bridge the gap between school orchestras and adult professional groups. No other orchestral organisation or institution in New Zealand provides such a comprehensive programme to young musicians .AYO toured to Germany and Slovenia last year, receiving standing ovations from capacity audiences at their six performances.

Henry Close won an 'Outstanding Performqnce' award at the 2018 AYO Soloist Competition for his elegant performance of Richard Strauss' first horn concerto, a work which reveals Strauss' love of the instrument.

Jacob Webster won the 2018 AYO Soloist Competition performing Mouquet's work for flute with beauty and poignancy.

Prokofiev's seventh and final symphony is a look back at the composer's life with superbly orchestrated melodious themes reminiscient of his childhood years.
